Besides a command of Basic English, what I
am attempting here is to present positive reasons for learning the English
language, and to have each student understand that proficiency in English gives
them the opportunity to communicate with many different types of people. My “positive reasons” are:
1.
The opportunity to learn from
and communicate with me, their teacher.
This of course necessitates my being a warm and caring presence in the
class.
2.
The opportunity to learn more
about aspects of Western culture they already enjoy: movies, television shows,
fictional characters.
3.
The opportunity to gain
confidence through knowledge of another culture and language.
